CALATHEA/PRAYER PLANT
Light: Prayer plants thrive best in bright indirect light! Do not put in direct sun as this will scorch the leaves.
Water: Calathea prefer to be watered with filtered, distilled or rain water– not tap water. Keep soil for your prayer plant evenly moist from spring until fall, water enough until water runs out of the holes in the bottom of your drainage pot. Avoid over watering to prevent root rot and yellowing leaves. Do not allow it to dry completely or sit in water. Water less in the winter keeping the soil slightly moist.
Soil: Plant calatheas in a 2:1 soil based compost and perlite for the best results. This allows it to hold moisture and dry out over time.
Fertilizing: Feed monthly with a balanced 10-10-10 houseplant fertilizer during the growing season, spring & summer. Tropical Houseplants will go through a dormant period in the winter and do not need as much fertilizer. Once every 3 months during the winter season is sufficient enough. Also less watering is needed during this time. Reapply regular fertilizing in the spring at the first sign of new growth!!
Temperature: Calathea prefers warm temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and can tolerate temperatures 10° lower at night time. Keep away from extreme heat sources or cold drafts!
Humidity: Calathea enjoys a higher humidity and thrive best in a 60%-80% humidity level range, above average ambient household humidity! Create a humid environment by misting the plant, using a pebble tray or a humidifier or grouping plants together. To read the levels in your home, be sure to invest in a hygrometer! This is a great plant for a bathroom where the shower is used daily and if adequate lighting is provided!
Pet Friendly(Toxic): Calathea & Prayer plants are non-toxic to pets. However, please still keep curious pets and children away!
Air Purifying: Don’t all plants?!?
Growth Pattern: Calathea & Prayer Plants come in all different shapes and forms. Many with gorgeous striking patterns. During the day the leaves will open up and flop down to allow the light. During night these leaves will fold into an upright position– hence its commonly known name Prayer Plants!

We ship orders Monday & Tuesday of each week to ensure your order is not held over into the weekend caused by any delays. If you have not received a tracking code by the following Wednesday after placing your order please email steve@springwatergardencenter.com with your order number to inquire. We ship using 3 main providers: Canada Post is the automatic selection at delivery. Please contact us directly for a FEDEX or PUROLATOR Shipping Quote!
We currently ship using Canada Post through our website to deliver our products Canada-wide. Shipping rates will be calculated at checkout. However, not every system is accurate all the time. If we require more shipping fees for your order we will let you (the customer) know as soon as we (Springwater Garden Center) know to help make the process smooth.
Plants are living things and may not always arrive in perfect condition. Shipping is at the buyers risk and expense. If temperature is below 7°C you may purchase the Winter Shipping Package for $8 per order. This includes a 96-hour heatpack and extra wrapping/packing supplies.
